A Breath of Fresh Air: Light, Layers, and Letting Go

March 2026

Back to Journal

There's something about the first hints of spring that makes you notice the spaces you live in a little differently. The days are brighter, the air feels lighter, and suddenly, your home, the one that's carried you through long winter nights, might start to feel heavy in ways you didn't notice before.

March is the perfect moment for a little design reset. Not a full renovation, not a complete purge, but a mindful editing of your home: letting go of what no longer serves you, layering in warmth and texture, and making space for light, both literally and metaphorically.

Declutter With Intention

Let's be clear: this isn't about forcing minimalism. It's about clarity. Ask yourself: Does this piece bring joy, function, or beauty to my life? If the answer is no, it might be time to let it go, whether that's a worn throw that's no longer cozy, a collection of candles that never get lit, or décor that's been "holding space" for years.

Editing with purpose makes every remaining piece matter more. Your favorite chairs, your meaningful art, or even the corner that catches the morning light suddenly has room to breathe, and so do you.

Layer Light, Textures, and Tones

Once you've cleared what no longer belongs, it's time to bring in light, layers, and textures.

Light: Swap heavy curtains for linen drapes or sheer panels that filter spring sun into every corner. Consider updating lampshades or bulbs to create warmer, more inviting glow.

Textures: Mix tactile finishes, a boucle pillow with a linen sofa, a soft wool throw on a wooden bench, a woven basket beside a cozy reading nook. Layers make spaces feel curated and comfortable, not sparse.

Tones: March is a transition month, so consider shifting your palette slightly. If your winter tones are deep and muted, bring in lighter neutrals, soft clay, mossy greens, or pale terracotta accents. Subtle changes can make rooms feel brighter and more awake.

Consider a Small Paint Refresh

Sometimes, all it takes is a fresh coat of paint to make a room feel new. You don't need to go bold, even adjusting undertones or brightening a soft neutral can change the mood entirely. A fresh wall can act as a canvas for everything else: your textures, your furnishings, your light.

Let Go, and Let Your Home Breathe

The magic of this seasonal reset isn't just in the physical space, it's in how you feel moving through it. When you remove excess, layer thoughtfully, and let light in, the home begins to feel less like a storage space and more like a companion. It's no longer just where you live; it's a space that supports your mood, your creativity, and your calm.

A breath of fresh air is never just outside your window. Sometimes, it starts inside your home.

Katie's Tip

Take one room this March. Clear, layer, lighten. Notice the difference in how you feel. That's the beginning of design that truly serves life, not trends.
